Bone fractures are a significant cause for initiating long-term care in Japan. In a 2016 Japan government survey, fractures and falls accounted for over 10% of the medical events requiring long-term care. We estimated the long-term care expenses due to bone fractures in Japan using published government statistical data. The cost of long-term care related to bone fractures has increased over time and was estimated at approximately \2 trillion in 2016. The highest proportion of the cost of long-term care was borne by the family; this cost was \835 billion in 2016. The increasing cost over time is considered to be primarily due to the increase in the number of caregivers.
