This report analyzes Medicare beneficiaries who transitioned from the community to a residential long-term care facility and who were using an antipsychotic medication when they were in the community. We specifically examined beneficiaries with at least one condition for which antipsychotic medications had an on-label indication. The analysis examined whether antipsychotic medication use changed after transition to nursing home and also changes in frequency of acute events after transition. Acute events measured are myocardial infarction, acute coronary ischemia, transient ischemic attack, acute stroke, and bone fractures – all health outcomes associated with antipsychotic medication use in a Medicare population.
