Variability in average length of stay for skilled nursing facilities: Opportunities exist for more efficient management

Skilled nursing facility (SNF) services represent a significant proportion of Medicare fee-for-service expenditures. There is significant variation in SNF average length of stay among Medicare beneficiaries admitted to a SNF after an acute inpatient hospital stay. This variation is unexplained by differences in patient case mix, highlighting the opportunity for more efficient management of length of stay.
